I have been dedicated to public interest work throughout my career and hope to continue advocating to protect civil rights and employees' rights in the workplace.

Alia Al-Khatib, a Senior Associate at Katz Banks Kumin, joined the firm in August 2020. During her time at the firm, she has helped clients achieve successful outcomes in a range of civil rights and discrimination matters under federal and state anti-discrimination statutes.  She has also represented whistleblowers in unlawful retaliation cases in the healthcare, financial, and cybersecurity industries.

Before joining the firm, Ms. Al-Khatib worked as a Staff Attorney with Justice at Work, where she litigated wage and hour and employment discrimination cases on behalf of workers in low-wage industries in Pennsylvania and conducted community outreach in support of workers’ rights. Prior to that, she was a Law Fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Florida, where she engaged in civil rights litigation and advocacy to advance immigrants’ rights and criminal justice reform.

Ms. Al-Khatib graduated first in her class from American University Washington College of Law and received the Dean's Award for Professional Responsibility for her work in the Immigrant Justice Clinic. After graduation, she clerked for the Honorable Hilda G. Tagle in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

Ms. Al-Khatib is a member of the Pennsylvania and Texas bars.  She is currently serving as Treasurer of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association and as a Board Observer with the Homeless Advocacy Project through the Philadelphia Bar Foundation’s Board Observer Program.
